CHRYSANTHEMUM SHOW

A highly creditable chrysanthemum show was opened by Mr. Massey at Syd-ney-street Hall yesterday in aid of the Hadfield Hostel. The display of blooms Was not very large, but was remarkable for the high quality of the blooms. Most of the prtee3 were carried off by Mrs r R. Pointon, of Petone, and Mr. F. Westbury, of Hutt. The blooms all round were exquisite in colour and large in size. Mr. A. J. Shailer, Palmerston ftorth, staged a large collection of chrysanthemums, which it was difficult to believe were cut ten days ago, and have been exhibited at five shows already, Mrs. C. H. Izard's collection of pot plants were remarkable for the small, but fine collection of orchids which included epidendrum vitellunum majus— with a cluster of rich scarlet flowers. Mr. J. N. Williams, of Frimley, and Mr. P. S. M'Lean, of Napier, sent a fine collection of chrysanthemums to the show. There were fivo ladles' decorated tables entered, the prizes of which will be allotted by ballot. There was. a competition for hats trimmed with natural flowers. Mr. J. B H&rcourt's chrysanthemum collec* tion for exhibition only, was much admired, and the same was to be said of Mr. Kerslake's blooms. The judge was Mr, F. Cooper. Mrs. N. E. Burton and Mrs. Hadfield were in charge ol the flower stall. The winners of the trimmed hat competition were Miss Shirtcliffe 1, Miss Marchant 2. Best decorated basket, <Miss Hudson. Open section, best trimmed hat, Miss Marchant 1. Mts^_Croll was an exhibitor in the amateur section with Japanese blooms. Much Credit is due to Mr. G. Jeffreys, the hon. secretary, for the success of the show. The executive committed were: — Mesdames H. S. Hadfield, Algar Williams, H. M. Gore, E. Hadfield, E. Anderson, A. Pearce, S. Kirkcaldie, and Messrs. J. B. Harcourt, T. Hood, C. W. Tringham, and Rev. A. W. Compton. The committee of the various stalls and tea room were Mesdameß Butts, C. H. Stephens, A. B. Williams, G. M. Rose, A. Martin, W. B. Hudson,' P. M. B. Fisher, Coleridge, Lady Stout, and Misses Coates, Fancourt, Edwards, and Rose.
