NOTES FROM DUNEDIN <>o(8To (8T TBLEGBAPH— SPECIAL TO THE POST.) ~* DUNEDIN, This Day. Dunedin fruiterers complain that this is the worst March they ,have experienced for a score of years. Several consignments of tomatoes and fruit la£t I week did not realise enough money to clear freightage and other charges. Agents have difficulty in obtaining 4d per lb (wholesale) for hothouse tomatoes. Very strong pressure is being brought to bear on Mr. William Belcher to induce him to contest the city Mayoralty this year, but h© is not inclined to accede to the request. In the event of Australian merchants drawing on the Dominion for potatoes this year, it is probable that an effort will be made in New Zealand to have removed or modified the "stiff" regulations laid down by the Commonwealth authorities as regards the importation of tubers grown in the country. Merchants seem to be convinced that unless these regulations are made easier it will not be "profitable to ship potatoes to Sydney. It is thought that the Hon. Mr. Fisher will* probably discuss the matter with the Commonwealth officials while he is in Australia. Local merchants also say that the Dominion Government should not make it compulsory for farmers to issue certificates which may be 'proved worthless by the rejection of his potatoes by a Government inspector. It' is claimed that one official inspection and certificate should suffice. ENQUIRY INTO MOTOR FATALITY (bt telegbaph— special to the post.) NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day. At the inquest on Norman Bewley, who died as the result of the motor-car accident, a verdict was returned of accidental death. -A rider , was, added recommending that drivers of cars should be subject to examination.
