While a family were absent from home an evening or two ago their orchard was visited, and nearly two hundredweight, of plums stolen. The Anglican Sunday School' picnic was held on the beach yesterday. It jpfoved very enjoyable. The Methodist School alpo held a similar function, the convenient grounds of Mr. D.Jttdd, being utilised. Mr. M'Donald, who has been connected with ihe dairying industry in this district, leaves shortly for Wellington to take a> prominent position with the Ffesh Food and Ice Company. Mrs. Murdoch, who intends to take up her residence in Wellington, hia been presented, on behalf of Shannon residents, with a handsome volume of Whittier's poems and an 'autograph album. The building trade is brisk at- the pre« sent time, and carpenters, bricklayers, etc., are having a busy time. Other trades are not brisk, and tradesmen generally are complaining of shortness of money.

The Commandant of tl»e Forces, MajorGeneral Godley, has .returned to Wellington from bis visit of inspection to the Auckland military district.
