EARLY SETTLERS

VISIT FROM HIS EXCELLENCY The Anniversary Day celebrations by the Early Settlers' Association were continued at Newtown Park after The Post went to press yesterday. His Excellency the Governor ahd the Countess of Liverpool arrived on the ground shortly after 5 p.m. and were welcomed by the Mayor (Mr. D. M'Laren). and the" Hon. J. E, Jenkinson. His Excellency paid special attention to the pioneers, with many of whom he exchanged pleasant conversation. Replying to a brief speech of welcome by the Hon. J. E. Jenkinson, His Excellency, who met with a cordial reception, said they were there to Celebrate the hard work and indefatigable efforts done by the pioneers in the old days, for the Dominion and for the Empire. Their fathers, when they Came to the various colonies, went forth not quite knowing what was going to happen to them, or whether they would meet with success or failure. But they carried with them that indomitable spirit which characterised our race, and that great heritage of which wo were so proud. As in the olden days the proudest boast was to say "Civis Romanus sum," so to-day tha proudest thing was to be a British subject. (Applause.) Wherever they went, and wherever the flag of Britain flew, they knew that under that flag they would find protection and freedom. There was no difference between those of us here and. those of us at Home. They always looked for joint and mutual support between the Old Country and her Dominions, and there was no doubt that in time of need the support of the Dominions would not be wanting. • % , Three cheers were, at the call of the Mayor, given for Their Excellencies, and, at the. suggestion of the Hon.
