Strong westerly winds have made the bars at Waiiganui and Patea umvorkable { and in the meantime the coastal service with Wellington is suspended. For five days now no boats have been able to get either in. or out of Patea, and this coming in the height of the busy season is putting shippers to some inconvenience. The Mana and the Aorere left for Patea last Friday, the Kiripaka sailed on Saturday, and the Kapuni last Monday. So far none of these boats have reached their destination. The first three are sheltering in Wanganui and are not likely to get out to-day, while nothing has been heard of the Kapuni. It is presumed that she is sheltering in the Sounds. The dairy produce will be accumulating at Patia, but there is excellent storage accommodation there. It is not thought that any difficulty will be experienced in bringing all tiie produce down, in time to catch the, next outgoing steamer— the • Athenic —sailing on the 23rd instant. . A bush fire which threatened to do considerable damage to adjoining properties Was extinguished in the Akatarawa district yesterday evening after a large area of bush had been destroyed. The first consignment of Australian grapes to hand this season arrived by the Manuka from Sydney to-day. Altogether the vessel brought about 500 cases of fruit consisting of pears, pineapples, legions, and watermelons. The Navua is due here to-morrow w.ith a big shipment of bananas — both bunches and cases. Heavy consignments of peaches are now being received in Wellington from Hawkes Bay and Motueka. They are fetching Is to 4s the half-case according to grade and condition. The income of the Vivian-6lreet branch of the Salvation Army last year amounted to £2421, made up as follows : SenioT corps account, £1854 15s 4d ; band account, £509 13s lOd j Sunday school account, £S6 18s lOd The expenditure during the same period totalled £2397 12s lOd, leaving a balance of Hm Us 2d. The name of the hotel should have been the Princess Theatre Hotel. _ Mr. Frank Crady, of the old-estab-lished and up-to-date shop for presents, advertises new goods for the New Year, including watches, jewellery, silver and electroplate, bags and purses.
