FAREWELL TO SALVATION ARMY OFFICER
Some 500 persons attended the Salvation Army Citadel last evening, when a farewell "social" was tendered by the Army to Adjutant and Mrs. Gunn, and to Captain Canty, who have been transferred to Christchurch and Auckland respectively. Brigadier Garmichael pre ; sided over the gathering. The proceed- ! ings were interspersed by enjoyable ; musical items rendered by the Army ' band, and Missea Collins and Cunningham (2). Valedictory addresses were delivered by Major Hoare, Brigadier Car- i michael (Divisional Commander of the Wellington Division), Mr. M'Kenzie, Major Denuiaton, and Sergeant* Major Kirk. The latter referred to the Adjutant as being a Christian gentleman in every sens© of the word. Ho was a man who always practised what he preached, believing that <rrample was better than precept. Another thing ' which weighed in the Adjutant's favour was the fact that he was a careful man, and as such" was expected to do great things in his new sphere of work. He wished Adjutant and' Mrs. Gunn "God speed." In; replying, the Adjutant said that he seized that opportunity of thanking the corps for their splendid co-operation during the year just passed. They had done well, and he trusted that they would be as successful in the future as they had been in the past. He said he appreciated the appointment conferred upon him. In the children's work, to which branch he was transferred, there was no better investment for a" man's time, money, and talents. In conclusioh, the Adjutant, thanked Captain Canty for his assistance, and said he would strive to merit all the good things that had been said about him. Captain Canty and Mrs. Gunn also responded. During the evening the secretary, Mr. Montgomery, notified the audience that £500 for the new set of silver-plated instruments recently purchased by the band, had been" completely paid off, a statement which was received with applause. Supper was served at the conclusion of the addresses, the meeting breaking up at a late hour. This evening the band will assemble at the Citadel at 7 o'clock, and thence proceed to the wharf, where a "sendoff" will be given the Adjutant. A welcome will be given on Thursday night to Adjutant Wellington, late of Petone, who hae been appointed to the Wellington Division as the Young People's Secretary.
