Prices for merinos are against buyers. HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE. The Department of Agriculture, Industrie*, and Commerce, has received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, dated London, 14th January, 1913, regarding the opening of the first series of colonial wool sales s— ''The wool sales have commenced. There ie a general and active demand, especially for merinos, which are 1 slightly higher. For crossbred^ the market is steady at previous quotations. Supplies will be moderate. Trade is good. It is eipected that present ' prices will continue, or advance. Thirty-five thousand bales of New Zealand wools aft- catalogued." The Bank of New Zealand has received following cable advice from its London office, dated 14th infit. :■— "The sales have opened with strong competition and large attendance of buyers. There is att active demand by Home buyers. Prices have a hardening tendency for crossbred, fine greasy, average. Prices have an easier § tendency for crossbred, coarse and medium greasy, average." Messrs. Dalgety and Company, Ltd., Wellington, are advised by cable from their London office under date of 14th inst., as follows :— "Wool sales opener}. Attendance of buyers is large, and competition animated. There is a good selection, and, compared with the closing rates of last series, merino and fine crossbred prices are very firm, and change, if any, is in seller's favour. For medium and cross crossbreds change, if any, in in buyer's favour. For merino wools, heavy, earthy, and wasty, prices are irregular." The t United Farmers' Co-operative Association, Ltd., 149, Lambton-quay, Wellington, have received the following cablegram from their London agents, under date 14th January :— • "The first series of wool gales opened to-day, and were well attended by Home, Continental, and American buyers. Competition was animated, and prices are practically unchanged. Fine and medium crossbred shows no quotable change. Coarse crossbred sold at par to 5 per Cent, decline as Compared with closing rates of previous sale." ' j The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited and Reduced, have received the following cablegram from their London house under date 14th instant:— l London Wool Sales.— There was a good attendance at the opening of the sales to-day, competition by Home and Continental buyers being spirited, and prices, as compared with the close of preceding series, ruled par to 5 per cent, higher for merino and fine greasy crossbred wool. The opening catalogues were representative, and America is buying suitable lots of crossbred. The market for coarse greasy crossbred wool is slightly easier. Messrs. Murray, Roberts, and Co., i Ltd., have received the following cablegram from their London friends, Messrs. Sanderson, Murray and Co., under date 14th January, 1913 :-~"Sales have opened firm— market shows no material change, except for greasy merinos, which ha?e advanced a shade."
