TOP WOOL PRICE
FURTHER BROKERS' REPORTS. The following brokers' reports of the local wool sales arrived too late for publication :—: — MURRAY, ROBERTS AND CO., LTD. Messrs. Murray, Roberts and Co. offered a catalogue of 2650 bales. Prices were fully 2d per lb higher than at the corresponding sale of last year. The wool was rather lighter in condition than the pluvious season, but many of the lots carried a fair proportion of utuwai seed, and many, espicially hogget woo], tender. Most of the lighter wools came under the influence of the American competition, the effect of which was apparent on the sale as a whole. A very good clearance was effected, few lots being withdrawn, and these only which carried high reserves from owners, a practice which U to be deprecated, especially in seasons like the present, when the demand is eager and prices ata high level. "We secured the top price of the day with a line of super Corriedale, at 13£ d per lb.*' The following is a rango of prices realised :— Medium Superior, to good. luferior. (I. (1. ,(). (1. (1. (1. On prices paid for coarse crossbteds at tlie corresponding sate last year, prices were up to 2d per lb and lid for fine and medium crossbredfi. There was a very good demand for coarse lustrous wools of good length. Generally speaking, the wool opened up dry and light, though in many cases seedy, due no doubt to the inclement weather preventing _ shearing. The following gives an indication of prices : — Shropshire, ll^d j medium crossbred, 10|d to lid ; course crossbred, 9|d to lOd ; pieces and bellies, 6|d to Bd. No super lots were offering. LEVIN AND CO., LTD. Messrs. Levin and Co., Ltd., report offering 2160 bales. The prospect of high prices had induced many possibly for the first time, to sell locally, and this more than compensated for the backward shearing. The Wools coming forward are in excellent order, despite th& bad winter and the phenomenally wet spring. Never has tho elipj as a whole, been lighter in grease ; and the wool, for soundness of staple, brightness, and cleanliness has seldom been equalled. We had in our catalogue a fine showing of wool, many of the best Wairarapa, Marlborough, and West Coast clips being represented. The buying Btrength was a record. Bepresentatives. numbering over sixty. of nearly all tho textile centres of the world were present. Bidding was very vigorous, competition being exceptionally strong. For all descriptions of wool the market showed an advance of l£d to 2|d on the December sale of last year. We sold the well-known clips of Mr. R. Liverton, Masterton (26 bales at 13id, 62 bales at 12d). and of Mr. J. 0. Bidwill, Featherston (13 bales at 13d, 37 bales at 12-Jd, and 43 bales at 12id), and of Messrs Bradley Bros., Pahatitanui (1_ bales at 13d and 32 bales at 12£ d), and several other clips at slightly lower prices."
