MEMORIAL 10 WAKEFIELD DISCUSSED IN CHRISTCHURCH. (it 'IELKGBAFH— SFECIAL TO THB POST.) CHRISTCHURCH, Thia Day. ' The services of Edward Gibbon Wakefield, who has been reasonably called the founder of New Zealand, and who was particularly identified with the founding of the Canterbury Province, claimed the consideration of the City Council last night for a few minuteß, when a letter was read from. Mr. J. H. Collier, , of Wellington, suggesting that some tangible memorial should be erected to his memory. Councillor W. H. Cooper said that, admitting the good that Wakefield had done in the early days, it waa still the duty of the Government to take actioa in the matter, and the municipalities might follow the lead. He moved :— "That it should be suggested to the Government that definite action should be taken to erect a Dominion memorial." Councillor H. B. Sorervsen -said that he was under the impression that Wakefield had been the founder of Canterbury, and in that case the province had not don« its duty. If a colonial memorial was to be erected^ there might be difficulty in finding a site. Certainly he was in favour of some permanent memorial in Christchurch, although he saw no objection to assisting Wellington in any action that might be taken, Councillor C. D. Morris Kaid that the province should not deal lightly with the matter, and he would be strongly in favour of assisting any movement such as Mr. Collier had suggested. The motion was earned.
