LOWER HUTT
At the fortnightly meeting of the Hutt Borough Council, held last evening, there were .present the Mayor (Mr. E. P. Bunny), and Councillors Knight, Hodgins, Hawthorn, Kempthorne, Clendon, Roots, Ball, and Hobbs. The Wellington -Kugby Football Union forwarded rent amounting to £20, and 13s one-third of the gate receipts. Permission was granted to the Fitzherberfc School authorities, Wellington, to use the recreation ground on 15th November for sports purposes. Messrs. Clendon Bros, wrote, stating their intention of erecting a substantial iron fence along the Bridge-street frontage of their property, and asking the council to erect a retaining wall to keep the footpath in position. It was resolved to instruct the Town Clerk to ascertain what is the practice in such cases in Wellington, and- to report to the Works Committee to deal with. A complaint was received from the Lands and Survey Department in reference to the,,, 'removal of certain Standard survey blocks, and it forwarded an 'account for £13 18s as the cost of replacing these blocks. ;~ It was resolved to instruot the engineer to make enquiries before the. amount is paid. A letter was received from Messrs. Dwan Bros., stating that the owners of a block of land between the Te Mamiv and Britannia Estate were anxiouß' to* carry out drainage improvements, and they asked* 'permission to 'lower a sill in Everest's Creek .culvert. '< The matter was Teferted to the Works Committee to deal with. A resident asked for exemp£iori from connecting his premises with the drainage. The engineer is to report on the matter. v The Finance Committee in its report stated that in i consequence of . the numerous complaints of the uneven pressure of the gas Supplied in the borough) the Town Clerk had been instructed to write to the Petone Borough Council, on the subject, 'refersiug to the terms Of the agreement, and stating that if the Petorte Council has 'no immediate intention of building the new gasometer, in accordance with the inducement held out at the time the agreement was re« newed, the council will "have to 1 conBidet its position in regard to the agreement. The half-yearly financial, report had been carefully considered 'and considered satisfactory." I'he committee \ recommended that the usual final rate demands' be now sent out, and authority bb given to sue for all rates ' unpaid within the time' stated in the demands. A number of gas accounts Were recommended to* be written off. The report was adopted. The engineer (Mr. W. J. Roche), in his report, stated that, the .repairs on Waterloo-road and ,'Pretoria-street had been carried out. Twenty-six chains of fencing had been , done on Wainui Hill, at a cost to date of £24 16s 9d. He recommended that a 3-inch main be carried from the main road to Pretoriastreet, and that lamps be erected, one halfway to Cornwall-street and one at the ,bend by the school. He estimated the cost at £242, and suggested that it be paid out of the gas loan. Effecting.repairs to the damage done by a recent storm had cost £89 Is 4d. Reference was made in the report to the Rotokakahi Creek, which, he said, was badly choked with fallen logs, etc., and silied up in places. If it were filled in, what small quantity of water that now finds its way into it would soon soak away. This Blatter Was referred to the Works Committee.
