NURSES FOR THE BACKBLOCKS
TRAINING IN ST. HELENS HOSPITALS. . In reply to a question in ' Parliament by Mr. Statham this afternoon, the Hon. E. H. Rhodes said t— The question of encouraging midwives to practice ! in. the baekbloeks has been the subject \ Of Considerable consideration on the part ! Of the Department, and hospital boards have been advised that free training wjll be given in our St.' Helens Hospitals to those women specially recommended by ' the boards as likely to make suitable midwives, provided they engage, on completion of their training, to serve for a • stated period in the more remote country districts. It is considered 4hat this policy is a better one" than to insist j on a six months' extension , of the period of training for midwivss, which, is now \ for registered- ".urses six . months, and for unregis(ereu nurses twelve months. If an additional six months' course were insisted upon, it might have the effect of deterring many excellent women, trained or untrained, . from undertaking the work, ahd thus might result in a shortage of ittidwives for the dominion, i
