VETERANS' HOME

A meeting of the Board of Governors of the Veterans' Home was held at the Cabinet room, Government Buildings, yesterday. His Excellency the -Governor presided. The annual report and balance-sheet for the year ended 30th June, 1912, was read and adopted. It showed that the capital fund has increased from £9040 to £9440j and that the receipts from donations, subscriptions, and military collections amounted to £237 2s 6d. The receipts are insufficient to cover eX' penses. The increase in cost of food and wages is attributable for part of this year's extra cost. Forty-two veterans are maintained in the home. Several building improvements have been effected during the year. His Excellency the Governor was reelected president, the Hon. Edwin Mitchelson honorary treasurer, and Colonel R. J. Collins, C.M.G., honorary secretary. The Prime Minister (Mr. Massey) and Mr. Alfred Kidd, of Auckland, were elected to fill vacancies on the Board of Governors. Major Carpenter, the recently-ap-pointed superintendent, was introduced to the board. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Hon. E. Mitchelson and Auckland committee for their good work on behalf of the home, and it was also agreed that a cordial vote of thanks be given to the medical and dental advisers and clergymen for their gratuitous services^ The meeting closed with the vote of thankß to the Governor.
