A JUBILEE GIFT
Ihe Wellington staff of Ross and Glen* dining assembled before leaving the warehouse last evening to listen to an announcement, to be made regarding the celebration of the firm's jubilee. Ross and Glendining began business fifty years ago, on 6th August,' lß62. ■ In order to mark the fifty years' existence of the house, said the manager (Mr. Jones), the firm had decided to give every employee, male and female, in its service ih the factories and warehouses in New Zealand and in the London branch, one months salary or wages. This, to his mmd, ' was a far more practical way of celebrating, the jubilee than the presentation of a gold medal or the holding of a big 'dinner. Since the Messrs. Koss and Glendining had been in business their success had -been phenomenal. The firm claimed to be the second oldest in New Zealand. He would not claim that they were perfect as employers of labour, but he did claim for them that they were fair, reasonable, and honourable,' and Very few, if any, could claim a better record than Ross and Glendining. They were progressive in their policy, as the Roslyn Mills testified," also their large warehouses all over the Dominion. Both Mr. Ross and Mr. Glendining were men who stood high in the commercial world, and whatever they took in hand thej carried through. He proposed a vote of thanks to -the firm for its generous gift and a wish that the members of it might be spared many days to reap the benefit of their past labours.' Mr. Gfeig (accountant) and Mr. Blacklock (warehouse staff )■ replied on behaK of their departments, and the vote of thanks was earned with enthusiasm. It is understood that tho jubilee cheque for the Wellington staff alone was for considerably over £1000.
