PUBLIC MEETING AT HASTINGS. [Bf T»r,HQBAPH— PRESS ASSOCIATION.] HASTINGS, This Day. A public meeting last night discussed the question of the stoppage of work on the East Coast railway, and passed this resolution: — "That this meeting, while approving*' of the action of the Government in vetoing wasteful expenditure, strongly urges the speedy completion of the -East Coast railway, provided it is completed by • up-.to-date, economical methods, and taken along the route' most advantageous to the people of New Zealand." Another resolution to the effect that the interests of the Dominion would be better served by adopting the inland route,- and opening up Government lands, was also carried.
