The Postal authorities adviso thai the 6.5. Maheno, which sailed from Sydney at 3 p.m. on the 18th inst. for Auckland, has on board an Australian mail, also an English mail, via Suez. The average attendance in both department* was 665 primary and 48 secondary. Casein manufacture finds an ardenb supporter in Mr. J. Pedereen, who waa specially cent by the Government to th© Continent to study the subject. Mr, Pedersen's conclusions ore :— ln Hamburg the high price of 2|d a gallon ifl paid for ekim-milk, and Germany gener* ally utilise sffoo tons of it annually for food purposes. At £31 per ton ia Europe (plus £2 freight from Welling?i i to J? am £ ur S) for a poor quality article, Mr, Pedemen sees a good thino in the industry. He thinks New Zealand farmers could produce casein of the highest quality, and • consequently receive the highest price. . Encounters with bulls on the road ot in the paddock, along with motor smashes and upset boats, provide much material for allegedly humorous black and white artist*. Mr. Primrose M'Con. Nell, director of one of the Government farms, treats the subject quite seriously. In an article on dehorning in tho Gov« ernment Agricultural Journal he affirms that "the loss of life caused by attacks from homed bulls is, I am sure, greater, than we realise ; and any one who, like the writer, has been for a few minutes at the mercy of a bull's horns it not likely to' hesitate in the matter of de« horning. In Ayrshire many fatal cases have occurred to my knowledge, not to speak of numerous cases of Berious and permanent injury, and yet the Ayrshire breeder continues to supply his etook with the most up-to-date means of dcs« truction in the shape of honiß." In the Journal of tho Department of Agriculture for the current month there is the beginning of an article by Mr. F. G. A. Stuckey, M.A., Wellington, on "The Mendeliali Theory of Heredity," written with a view to the practical ap« plication of ( the principles to farming and stock raising. The article is not too erudite for ordinary leadei'B, and is il« lustrated by lucid diagrams. t The usa of basic slag as an insecticide is also re« ferred to in the journal. Reference is made to a fleeco of specially selected Lincoln ewe hogget fleece wool, fourteen months' growth, from Mr. William Perry, of Pen rose, Masterton, for exhibition alongside English wool at the Royal Show of England. It was considered that this fleece was equal if not superior to anything of its class grown in England, and that it would prove a valuable advertisament for the wool*growing industry of the Dominion. The show authorities declined to allow the fleece to be exhibited with English wools, and it was courteously permitted by the Victorian Agent-General to be exhibited in his court. In the course of an editorial, the 'Lyttelton Times expresses the hope that the Canterbury branch of the Women's Hocial and Political League will accept the good advice offered to it by Mrs. Newell and Mrs. Blunt at last meeting, "and not ally itself with either of the official political parties. Women are just as capable as men are of taking an intelligent view of public questions, and perhaps even more capable of estimating the true worth of candidates for Parliament, but if we understand the object of the league aright, it is rather to educate its members in the problems that specially concern their sex tban to assist any particular party at election time. Of course the members will take sides when they have to choose their representatives in the Legislature, and they will be all the more likely to take the right Bido for having studied the policies and tho records of the parties ( but if they convert the league into a mere election committee, a cog in one party machine or the other^ their influence on public opinion will bo much Ns than it will be if they follow, as Mrs. Newell- put it, broad lines of patriotism for the welfare of tho country. There mo already party organisations enough to give women plenty of BCopo for tba display of their political predilections, and to multiply them would b» only to add » the misunderstanding and" coufusion which their best friends are anxious to dispel." Tho Wellington Stock Exchange will be closed on Monday next for the observance of Dominion Day. Mr. C. S. Mainwaring writes "calling the attention of the City Councillors to the fact that their making John-streefe the end of the section is causing a lot of suffering to a class who cannot afford topay the extra fare for the short ride to the hospital gate."
