CRICKET

(By Half-Volley.) The local cricket fraternity have been wondering if tho Basin Reßerve will bB ready for the commencement of the cricket season in October. Since the end of last season the Reserve has undergone extensive levelling, etc., but although the groundsman (Mr. J. V. Saunders) and his assistants have done all in their power to get the ground in readiness, it is now anticipated that that will be an impossibility, as the incessant rains during the winter months hindered ths work a great deal. It is worthy of note that all the pitohes (five) are in con* dition, but the outfield may not be ready for some time^-in faot, the area surrounding the pitches is still under treatment. Although it is anticipated that the Reserve will be quite ready in November or December, the Cricket Association will have to play , the 8^ n i° r games on some other ground. Probably the association will arrange for that at their first meeting. , In all probability the Kelburne Park will be chosen as the first ground for senior games, as it is recognised by junior players to be one of the best in Wellington; some say that it is as good as the Basin Reserve tor cricket purposes. However, that remains to be seen. If the Athletic Park is available this season, it is hoped the Grounds Committee will try and arrange for matches to take place there. If they can secure this grouhd, no difficulty should be experienced in arranging fixtures. A well-known Victorian cricketer (Mr. B. J. Kortlang) has come to live here, and should prove an acceptable addition to the cricketing ranks.
