PLUCKING LIVE GEESE
An endeavour is being made in Ireland to check the practice of plucking the feathers from live geese. The Limerick branch of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals on Bth August prosecuted Michael Forde, a professional plucker, for alleged illtreatment of 24 geese in this way. John Nolan, a farmer, was also prosecuted on an allegation that he allowed his wife to pluck 19 live geese. A witness stated that the practice had existed in Ireland for 800 years, and that the trade in feathers was a staple industry of the country. The Magistrates convicted, fining Forde 21s and 20s costs and Nolan 10s and 10s costs.
