SENTENCED TO DEATH

BURGLAR WHO ATTEMPTED TO MURDER MR. SYME. By Telegraph.-Prees Aeßoci«tion.--Copyrlgh». MELBOURNE, 19th September. Alan Moore, the burglar who entered the house of Mr. Geoffrey Syine, one of the Age proprietors, on 21st August, was tried to-day on a charge of attempting to murder Mr. Syme. The latter, it will be remembered, closed with the intruder, and a fierce struggle followed in which Mr. Syme suffered some injury, including a stab. Moore was convicted, and sentenced to death. Moore's counsel urged that accused used a revolver to frighten Mr. Syme, and did not intend to shoot him. The jury recommended Moore to mercy on the ground that he might have inflicted more serious harm than he did.
