The Education Committee of the House of Representatives has referred to the Government for favourable consideration a petition that training hostels be established in connection with technical schools. At a meeting of the Eastbourne Defence Bine Club this week, President Hobbs in the chair, it was decided to arrange a progressive programme for the coming season. The inmates were aroused by the smoke, and escaped on to the upper verandah, whence they were rescued with some difficulty by Mr. Easton and his sons. Mr. Levy was severely cut about the head as a result of a fall. The contents, which were damaged by smoke, heat, and wator, were insured in the Northern Office— furniture £115, stock £40, and machinery and tools £10. The building is covered by a policy in the Phoenix for £500. Instruction was given to the City Solicitor by the Council last night to apply for an injunction, supplementing the same by other proceedings, against an owner of property at' Onepu-road who was stated to have commenced to erect a dwelling without first obtaining a permit. The first of the two fire stations in the Miramar Borough will be opened at 3 o'clock to-morrow afternoon by the Mayor of the borough (Mr. H. N. M'Leod). Tramway passes for Charitable Institutions have engaged the attention of the City Council for some time past. Last night the Tramways Committee reported that it had given consideration to the question, and recommended that the Tramways Board of Management be authorised, on payment of the fees fixed by the council, to issue passes to the present holders of same, with the addition of the two deaconesses' ' of the Young Women's Christian Association and the secretary of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children. The recommendation was agreed to. Both the Lower Hutt and Petone fire brigades had cause to turn out last night. Afc Lower Hutfc, flames issuing from the chimney of the Hutt Valley Timber Co.'s premises caused an alarm to be I souhded, but the brigade's services were not required. It appears that tlie fire hose reel had been removed from the sta-> tion unknown to 'the brigade. Ifc was quickly found, however. At Petono a lalse alarm called the brigade out shortly after the Hutfc bell rang. The alarmist, not satisfied with calling tho brigade out. badly damaged the alarm-box.
