LOCAL AND GENERAL Many subjects promoted much speech in the House of Representatives yesterday. In the afternoon the Waihi trouble was briefly discussed. The Government was asked for the names of the persons who had applied for the extra police, and the Minister of Justice (the Hon. A. L. , Herdman) replied that requests had come from scores of people. Mr. R. M'Callum, who saw his Marriages Validation Bill through committee last week, had the" pain yesterday of witnessing its rejection on the third reading by 2? votes to 26. Mr. T. K. Sidey abandoned his Mean Time Bill (Daylight Saving) as a hopeless proposal for this session. Mr. Hindmarsh's Legislature Amendment Bill (containing the newspaper "signed-article" proposals) made its final appearance for this vcar ; it was "talked out,' 1 and in counted among the session's slain. After much talk, the Auckland Education Reserves Bill was read a third timo and passed. Just, before the supper adjournment the House went into committee on the Public Service Heform Bill, and eloquence was abundant till 1.15 this morning, when pro* gress was reported after three clauses ( had been passed. Several Oppositionists contended that the discussion should have been deferred till members and the public had] been able to study the forty-four amendments proposed by the Government, and the Opposition's tactics did secure the timo desired for that examination of the altered Bill. The Legislative Council resumed work after nearly a fortnight's holiday, and had a mild Bitting of two hours. The first of this season's green pena arrived to-day from Nelson, and were sold by the New Zealand Farmers' Cooperative Company at tho exceptionally high price of As 6d to 4e 7d per pecu of seven pounds. They were grown on tho sunny elope 3of the hlllfi around Hope, in which locality frost is un« known at any time of the year.
