[%r TELEGRAPH— PRESS ASSOCIATION.] GISBORNE, This Day. The steamer Squall, while on her proper course coming out of Tolaga Bay for Gisborne yesterday morning, struck a submerged object, and arrived at Gis» borne yesterday in a leaky condition. An extra pump was procured, and the water easily kept down, temporary repairs being effected. The Squall is expected to leave to-night for Auckland. . Later. Captain Stewart, of the Squall, states that tho submerged object must have been a log. It struck the vessel amidships, and dented the butt of one y'ato, starting five rivets. The steamer made water immediately. A mat was affixed over the damaged plate, and the three ship's pumps kept the water in check. The mishap occurred just as the steamer cleared Tolaga, about three-quarters of a mile off land.
