ELECTRIC PoVeR FOR SHIPS. According to American papers teeU have just been, made lit Schehectddy of two electric motors building by the General Electric Company for the U.S. collier Jupiter, of 20,000 tons displacement, which is to be the first large vessel to be driven by electricity. The Jupiter is one of three sister vessels, one of the others being fitted with turbilie engines and the other by reciprocating engines. Tlie Jupiter is being built at the Mare Island Navy Yard, and is to attain a speed of 14 knots. DRAYTON GRANGE, FOR AVONMOUTH. The Drayton Grange was due to sail from Lyttelton to-day for Avonmouth, via Lac Palmas. She is taking several passengers, the majority of them being from Wellington. Sailing from Westport at 11 p.m. to-morrow the KomatsL is due here on Sunday night or early on Monday. The Union Company was advised this morning that there was considerable eea at Westport. The Mapourika was lying outside, but it was hoped to .despatch her at 9 o'clock tonight for Nelson and Wellington. The Taviuni will not leave Lyttelton until 4 o'clock this afternoon, and is due here early to-morrow morning. She will sail again at noon for Nelson, New Plymouth, Westport, and GreymoUth. ' Having arrived at Auckland the Indralema is expected in Wellington about next Thursday from New York. Bhe has 1100 tons of cargo to discharge here, and later will get away for southern ports. The steamer Zealondia, which is timed to leave Auckland at 5 o'clock today for Vancouver, waß to chip 2000 cases of butter at the northern port. This will be in addition to her usual shipment of wool and bidet,. An arrival that may be looked for early in September Is the tramp steamer Hurst, which is now ou her way from Japan to Australian and New Zealand portE. • The Huret is a steamer of 4718 tons, and is commanded by Captain Moody. Mr. H. Barnett has 'signed off the Tnrakina as third officer. He left the veaael yesterday, and intends settling in New Zealand. Mr. C. Morgan lias joined the b.b. Manuka at> second officer. The Zealandia, which arrived hi Auckland early this morning,- is timed to leave fit 5 o'clock tins evening for Vancouver, via Fiji and Honolulu. She is due at her destination ou the 17th September. The collier Melbourne, which arrived hi Wellington last Saturday night, and left later | for Nelson,, returned to port this morning. She berthed at Miramar iv order to discharge the balance of her cargo for the gasworks. Rapid progress is being made with the deepening of the Suez Canal. A message to the Hamburg-American Line from Port Said states | that the Canal Company anticipates that within the next two years it will be possible for ships with i draught of 30ft to pass through the waterway.
