LADIES' CHAMPIONSHIPS --iii TOURNAMENT AT NELSON. [BY TELBOBAPH — PBESS ASSOCIATION.] NELSON, 29th August. The eighteenth ladies' gdlf championship tournament of New Zealand, held under the auspices of the Ladies' Golf Union, opened on Tahunanui links this morning. The entries received were not so large as at the last championship meeting in 'Wellington, but those who have entered include the best players. Amongst the most prominent competitors aye Miss L. Brandon (present champion of New Zealand and runner-up to Mrs. Bevan three years ago) and Mrs. Guy Williams, probably the most oxpenenced player competing, and one whose golf career extends over fourteen years, in which she has had various wins to her credit. Other names well known in the New Zealand golfing world are : Miss Snodgrass, champion of the West Coast, Miss Gould, last year's runnerup, Mrs. Slack, runner-up in 1910. Miss B. Ledger, champion of the Nelson Club for the past three years, Miss Gorrie (Auckland and Napier champion), and Miss Pearce, who was defeated in the semi-final last year, but who has recorded some rather phenomenal scores in Wellington this year. It is considered that Miss Brandon will have hard fights if she is to retain the championship title. The opening event was the first round of the championship, which commenced in weather ideal for golf, although uncomfortable perhaps for the players. The "Scotch mist" which then prevailed developed into heavier rain later on; and was probably the cause of the comparatively high scoring in the handicap match. In the first round of the championship, save for the contest between Miss Theomin and Miss Anderson, the matches were won by comfortable margins. A senior and junior stroke handicap was played in the afternoon, and a large number of contestants went out. None of the cards handed in contained astonishing performances, three 94's being the lowest. Miss Sybil Abraham came first in the senior event, and Miss Richmond first in the junior. The result of the competitions to date are as follow :—: — CHAMPIONSHIP. Miss Gould beat Mrs. Maclaine— 7 up and 6 to play. Mrs. Slack beat Miss J. Mill— s up and 3 to play. Miss Thsomin beat Miss P. Anderson— 1 U P- . Miss Burnes beat Miss Rattray— 3 up and 2 to play. Miss Tweed beat Miss Cross— -5 up and 4to play. •
To-morrow the second round of the championship will be played in the morning, and the Bogey Handicap in tho afternoon."
