ALLEGED LIBEL CASES
[BY TELEGRAPH— PBESS ASSOCIATION.} INVERCARCILL, 29th August. At the Supreme Court to-day, the hearing of the libel case, John Friend v. Alexander M'Gavock, was continued. The defendant pleaded justification of his charge that the plaintiff had neglect' ed his duty as ranger for the Acclimatisation Society. The jury returned a verdict for the plaintiff, and assessed the damages at two pounds, costs being given against defendant. CHRISTCHURCH, 29th August. Dr. Barclay has issued a writ for alleged slander and libel against the Workers' Union and itfl president, claiming £501 damages. The case is to be heard at the December sittings of the Supreme Court. The alleged objectionable matter appeared in a report of the union's meetings. The libel action, L. H. Booth, y. Tho Triad," Ltd., is set down for heaving toi morrow, morning. It ia understood the case will be settled.
