FRENCH EXAMINATIONS

MISS MONA GALE WINS GOLD MEDAL. The competition held by the Cercle Litteraire Francais to decide the winners of the gold and silver medals offered by the Cercle for proficiency in the French languago took place in the Camera Club's Rooms on Satm day last. The competition, probably through being limited to students of the public and private schools who are under eighteen years of age, did not produce as many competitors as was expected, only eight entering for examination. Nevertheless, this being the first of the annual competitions to be held by the Cercle, it was decided to proceed with the examination, and, in view of the ability shown by the competitors, the Cercle considers the result of its efforts as very satisfactory. The report presented to the council of the Cercle by the examiners (the Hon. J. Rigg), Capt. Barclay, and Monsieur M. Decleene) showed that the highest percentage of marks for reading, writing, and speaking the French language had been awarded to Miss Mona Gale (93 per cent.), and the next higheut to Miss Dorothy Evans (86 per cent.). It was therefore decided by the council that the gold medal should be awarded to Miss Gale and the silver medal to Miss Evans subject to their satisfying the council as to their • respective ages-; also that these medals should be presented to the winners at the annual fete of the Cercle. The examiners in commenting on their report spoke in high terms of the qualifications of the candidates as a whole, and pointed to the fact that the candidate lowest on the list had received 75 per cent, of the maximum number of marks awarded in what they considered a high standard, as evidence of the excellent teaching of French that obtains in some of the private schools in this cifc y* __««_______
