The Maitai was, when the last mail left, running between Hobart and Melbourne, in place of the Moana, aud was to continue in that < running until relieved by the Moerakl. Tlie Moan a will be undergoing survey and overhaul until the 14th August, on which day she sails from Dunedin for Lyttelton, Wellington, and Sydney. She ie due to reach Sydney on the 80th August, add on arrival withdraws from the intercolonial run, and her place 'will be taken by the Maitai. The Manuka, which leaves San Fmncisco on the 24th last., will then make her last trip in the New ZealandCalifornian run, entering the intercolonial eervice on her arrival at Sydney on the 20th August. On the run across the Tafiman the warship wae to undergo her annual speed trials. It ie expected that she will visit Auckland again in December or January next. WITHIN WIRELESS RANGE. The postal authorities advise that the following vessels, will probably be in wirelese communication with. Wellington this evening :— Zealand ia (bound from Auckland to Sydney direct), Zealandic (from Auckland to London, via way ports), Rotorua (from Wellington to London, via way ports), Wimmera (fiom Wellington to Sydney via northern ports), Talune (from -Auckland to Raiotonga and Papeete), Makura (from Sydney to Auckland direct), Hauroto (from Auckland to Suva), Maitai (from Melbourne and Hobart to Wellington via southern ports), and Ulimaroa (from Wellington to Melbourne, via eouthern ports ann Hobart). THE P. AND O. COMPANY. According to information which reached Perth by tne last mail, people in London, with the denials of the London General Omnibus officiate recent 'in. their memories, are wondering df what happened in that case is going io happen in the P. and O. B.N. Company (says the West Australian). Undoubtedly the omnibus officials were sincere in their, denials that they knew of any arrangement — which so soon afterwards wae made, the shares having &teedily risen despite such denials— and mofct undoubtedly the P. and O. caiefe are regarded as being no less sincere, Reporte, however, of a very definite character, with an elaboration of detail, are persisted in regarding an offer to purchase the undertaking of the great Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, and .the figure named and persisted In is £8,000,000 cash, for the whole of the preferred and deferred stock. Whilst all enquiries at tile P. and O. head office in. Leadenhall-street meet with emphatic denial, at the offices of the various companies which unitedly are credited with the desire to purchase, there is no euch denial, Tlie Invariable reply elicited in fciieee quarters is "nothing to communicate." .THE SCOW CURLEW. Further evidence of the seaworthy condition of Auckland-built vessels is shown by the fact that the scow Curlew has turned up eafely on the Australian coast after having experienced a trying time in the recent heavy gales (says an Auckland paper). The Curlew was formerly a well-known Auckland trader,, and was purchased some time ago by Messrs E. D. Pyke and Co., Ltd., of Sydney, for the Australian coastal trade. She is a vessel of 96 gross tons, and was built at Auckland in 1007. Australian nles to hand state that when the steamer Star of India was en route to Sydney from Brisbane a schooner flying Bignals was sighted, and when the big steamer came close enough it was found that the vessel was the bcow Curlew, for which grave fears were entertained owing to her being overdue. The captain of tho little vessel required medical assistance, which the Star of India could not give, and being informed of thie she stood away for the Clarence^ Heads. The Kaitangtta is at present undergoing overhaul at Port Chalmers. She will afterwards load timber at Greymouth for Sydney. On the 12th August the U. S. and A. chartered steamer Blrkenfels is eeheduled to sail from New York, for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. The steamer comes to New Zealand, via Melbourne and Sydney.
