BOXING MEETING OF THE NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL.
TEAM FOR AUSTRALIA, fBI XELEOBAPn — PBKBB ASSOCIATION.) OHRISTCIIURCH, This Day. The Boxing Council at its last meeting decided to urge the associations to encourage boxing among Territorials. In reply to a question regarding the status of Navy men who had competed for money prizes in Navy competitions, the council quoted the English ruling that such men forfeited their, amateur status. The following were selected to compete in tho Australasian championships: — Bantam, J. Gunn; feather, G. Barr; light, G. Penroso; heavy, S. Fitzsimmons. The inclusion of Penrose was partly prompted by the fact that ho is at present, in Australia, and is willing to go to Sydney at his own expense. In view of the financial position of tho council, it was decided to select only four representatives, but to mako representations to the Northern and Otago Associations in the hope- that they will be able to help the finances to enable Mitchell (welter), and Boreham (middleweight) to bo included. The first professional contest of this Beason promoted by the local association is to take place at the Town Hall on Wednesday next, when Hannan, of Australia, meets Murphy, of Wellington. The visitor was seen_ hero on three occasions last season, and in scoring three wins over first-class men established his claim to be considered one of the best light-weights seen here for a number of years. On this occasion •he is meeting Murphy at 10.5, the latter being somewhat over the recognised light-weight limit. What should prove to be excellent preliminaries will abo be provided. The box plan will open at Armit's on Saturday next. '
