NORTHERN CHIEF IN A GALE.
Wbat Captain Johnson, a mariner of long experience, who is at present in command of the barque Northern Chief, describes as being the -worst weather conditions be bas even known were those associated vith him in the latest voyage of this barque from Auckland to Sydney. The little vessel, 253 tons, saved her sails, and consequently looked none fheworse from a distance as «he went to her anchorage at Berry's Bay. But she bears evidence internally of having bad a terrific passage (says the Sydney Herald). The member* of the crew were heartily glad to reach port. They agreed with the captain that the voyage was the worst that they, too. had ever experienced. Everything movable- on deck was washed overboard. The cargo (215,000 ft of kauri timber) wae, however, safely brought to port. The steamer Karamu, built by Meaue. Barnage and Ferguson, Ltd., Leiti, for the Union Company, went oo her official trial on the Firth of Forbh, before the last mall left. 1 The enginee worked faultlessly, a speed of il{ knots on a metusured mile being obtained. Captain McDonald, representing the owners, expressed himself highly pleased with the .vetBel. ' She sailed for New Zealand on, 10th June. Captain J. T.
