BIG FIRE IN MELBOURNE TIMBER YARDS DESTROYED. POLICE AND PRISONERS' HOT TIME.

By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright. MELBOURNE, 30th July. A fire at Stone's timber yard at Kitzroy, covering three acres, destroyed timber' and machinery to the value of £20,000. The Town Hall and a row of cottages across tho street were badly damaged, the inmates escaping m their night attire. There were several narrow escapes. The police headquarters in the Town Hall, where a number of constables were sleeping, caught fire and one man was rescued in an unconscious condition. Prisoners in the cells had n hot time, but were removed to safety.
