PAYMENT OF TEACHERS

NEW SYSTEM INSTITUTED. A new system of the payment of teachers under the Education Board has been instituted, and will come into operation on the first of next month. It aims at saving the board members trouble in signing a great number of cheques every month, and will ensure the teachers receiving their salaries on the due date — the first of the month. Mr. Lee (chairman) explained the idea in these words : "This is the first month in which a new system of payment of teachers obtains. The secretary (Mr. G. L. Stewart) suggests that instead of members of the board being called upon to sign over 400 cheques every month it would be simpler if payment could be made through the various branches (15) of the Bank of New Zealand. Mr. Stewart has arranged to have a distinctive cheque in use for the monthly payment of salaries. The salaries will be paid in one lump sum into the central Bank of New, Zealand at Wellington. The branches of this bank will have authority to pay all cheques signed by those in authority — headmasters, etc. I think the idea will work out all right, and will save the office a lot of trouble. It has certainly been some trouble to start, but it will mean a good deal of saving of troub'e to members of the board." The scheme was approved unanimously by the board.
