GAMING CASE

JOHN JAMES ADAMS CONVICTED. Finality in the, case xa which John. James Adams, a blacksmith, was charged with having, on the sth of July, used his premises — in 63, Taranakistreet — as a common gaming-house, was v reached in the Magistrate's Court to- v day, ' the Magistrate (Mr. W. G. Riddell) entering a conviction and imposing a penalty of £5, with costs £1 Is. At the healing a constable deposed to making a bet with defendant at hie shop on each of the ollowing days :—: — 27th June, 4th July, taid sth July. Defendant's counsel, Mr. J. J. M'Grath, objected to evidence about happenings on days' other than the one mentioned in the information, but Sub-Inspector Sheehan contended that it was admissible, as it showed system on the part of defendant. Authorities were quoted in aupporfc of the contention. His Worship said that proof of one bet alone would not be sufficient to convict defendant of using his premises as a common gaming-house, but the presence of a number of race-cai'ds in his shop, and the sequence of the entries in his note-book, which could be connected with races taking place on the 4th and sth of July, was, with the other evidence' of betting, sufficient to warrant the Court inferring that other bete had been made in the shop on the sth of July. A second information, charging Adams with having made bets in hie shop— a registered factory — wae withdrawn.
