A PROFESSOR'S VIEWS
Professor M'Kenzie, of Victoria- College, made his views on the subject of the Bible in gchoole perfectly plain at the Central Mission Brotherhood meeting on Sunday. The Rev. J. Crewes prosided. The professor affirmed that it was absolutely useless "to attempt to make ourselves or our children believe that the Bible is what it has been so long represented to b<* — viz., the veri table ' Word of God.' " He acknowledged the value of the Bible so far as it went, but would strenuously oppono its introduction into the State schools. If this were done teachers would be virtually submitted to a religious test, and the profession would be dragged at the wheels of sectarianism. To introduce the Bible would be a pious fraud on the children unless' teachers were left free to use the Bible in the light of modern Biblical research and scholarship. If parents and the clergy were in downright earnest on the subject they could, without any serious selfsacrifice, make ample provision, for supplying religious instruction without interfering with the secular system. The lecfcurei' was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The Rev. G. Cook, of Thorndon, will reply to the professor next Sunday.
