KILLED ON THE RAILWAY
A middle-aged man of the labouring class, whose name has not yet been ascertained, met with his death on the railway line between Thcrndon station and' the viaduct on the town side of the first tunnel on the Manawatu line at half-past 2 o'clock this afternoon. A train from John&onville was passing the Vacuum Oil Company's premises on its way from Johnsonville when it ranvover a man who was lying across the rails) severing the head from the body and cutting off one of his arms. The Railway Department states that as the train approached the man suddenly threw himself across the line. The driver of the engine (Pearce) promptly applied the brakes, but before the locomotive could be brought to a standstill it had gone over the unfortunate "fellow.
