[«I TELEGRAPH — PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WAITABA, 24th June. The first pile *bf the now ferro-con-crete and bteel girder bridge was driven to-day. The bridge ie to bB 240 feet long en fiv« concrete piles. Th© weight of th* piles is about 250 tons, and the ironwork another 300 tons. The cost will bo about £10,000. The structure is roplacing the bridge erected by the Provincial Government, the first pile of which was driven forty-two years ago last Friday. Money was so scarce that the Provincial Council borrowed JB2BOO ai 10 per cent., owing to want of funds while Waiting for the sale of Crown lands to repuy the amount. The Mew bridge will allow two traction engines to pass, and will fill a long-felt want. The Government is subsidising JB3OOO, and the council is borrowing £7000.
