CIVIC MATTERS

■ MEETING OF CITY COUNCIL COMMITTEE REPORTS. The City Council met last evening. Present : The "Mayor (Mr. D. M'Laren), and Councillors Smith, Cohen, Frost, Trevor, Atkinson, Godber, Fuller, Cameron. Hindmarsh, Fitzgerald, Shirtcliffe, and Fletcher. The committee recommended : — Thai the application of of a Corporation tenant in Willis-etreet to have an alteration made in the front of his shop, be granted, provided he pays £25, being half the estimated cost of the alterations, and also agrees to take a five years' lease of the shop. That the recommendations of the City Engineer with regard to the conditions of employment .of the Destructor Hands, be given effect to. Accounts, amounting to £8781 14s 4d. were passed for payment. The report was adopted. POWER STATION AND TRAMWAYS. The Power Stations and Tramways Committee recommended : — That liability be denied in connection with a claim for damages for alleged failure on the part, of the lighting department to supply electrical energy for power purposes to a firm at Khandallah. That the pay of three employees in the Tramways Department be made up to full for the time they were absent from work through accidents sustained whilst on duty. That bonuses to conductors for the quarter ended 16th April last, and amounting to £19 2s 8d be paid. That the tramway stopping place at Boxhill. on the Brooklyn line, be shifted about 50 yards nearer the city, ac recommended by the Tramways Board. That promissory notes be accepted in approved cases in connection witn the electric light installations on the deferred payment system in the suburban districts. Accounts amounting to £7417 13e 7d were passed for payment. Some discussion took place on the question of the acceptance of promissory notes. The Mayor explained that the system had been in. operation for eighteen months already, and not one promissory note had been dishonoured. Other councillors said that the -risk wa* very small. The recommendations and report were adopted. BATHS AND RESERVES. The Bathe and Reserves Committee recommended : — That the tender of Mr. R. G. Knight be accepted for the lease of Town Belt Section 21. The amount of the tender is £10 per annum, and the area, of the section is approximately three acres. That the Hospital and Charitable Aid Department be informed that permission cannot be granted for the erection of clothes lines on the Town Belt section at the rear of St. Helen's Hospital, as the section is leased. — The report was. adopted. BYLAWS AND FffiE BRIGADE. The Bylaws, Fire Brigade, and Street Lighting Committee reported that they have granted permission for the erection, of a Nurse's Home at the corner of Abel Smith-street and Kensington-street, as recommended by the City Engineer. The report was adopted. CONTRACT PENALTDSS. The council decided that a penalty of £10 be imposed in connection with the late fulfilment of Messrs. Stewart Timber Company's contract for the supply of cross arms to the Lighting Department. In connection with the late delivery of Messrs. P. R. Baillie's contract for meters, no penalty was imposed, as the Tramway*C Committee reported they were , satisfied that the delay was due to the labour troubles in England.
