NARROW ESCAPE

AUSTRALIANS ON A "GLUE POT" DRAW IN FAVOUR OF SHIRE.(Received June 13, 10.10 a.m*) LONDON, 12th June. The Australia- Yorkshire game resulted in a draw. At the finish, Australia wanted 78, and had lost six wickets. The weather was dull and the wicket soft. Pky was resumed with Jennings 19, and Gregory 5, facing Drake and Hirst. Tasker kept wicket in place of Dolphin, who retired, lanie. Five runs were added to the overnight score of 28, when Drake knocked back Gregory's middle stump. Four for 33. Mayne, after scoring seven, played forward to a break-back from Haigh, and was bowled. Five for 69. The ball came round the batsman's legs. Fifty was posted in 85 minutes. Jennings was responsible for 52 out of 69, his individual score taking 100 minutes. Minnett was bowled for one by Haigh — six for 73 — and then^ Jennings played the same bowler on ; having made 60 runs out of 78. His innings was a splendid display on a treacherous pitch, and hk score included four 4's. The batsman was heartily cheered for his effort. He had been at the wickets two hours. Seven for 78. When 26 he gave a chance to Denton at short-leg.. At this stage the light became very indifforent. Emory, before scoring, put his leg in front to Haigh, and Carkeek was splendidly caught by Booth in the slips. Hazlitt, after hitting up 19, was out l.b.w. in trying to negotiate a fullpitch. COUNTY "DECLARES" AT 7 FOR 66. The County, on going in a second time, "declared" at seven for 66. By this time the attendance had increased to 5000. The weather waß brighter in the afternoon. ! Wilson and Bates opened again, Emery and Macartney leading the attack. The pair was shortly replaced by Hazlitt and Wliitty, who proved deadly. Hazlitt started by removing Bates's offstum after he had made 19, and Denton was similarly treated. Two runs later Drake got leg-before to the same bowler. Three for 50. Four more wickota added 19j the bowlers' fine length and clever variation of pace dividing the honours. With the score 67 for seven, Yorkshire "declared." Australia had seventy-five minutes in which to get 114 runs to win. But their second effort was a procession. They made such a poor showing against Haigh that whin time was called they had only 35 runs up for the loss of six wicket's. Haigh captured the whole lot at a cost of 14 runs, Kelleway, who opened with Jennings, alone being able to negotiate this bowler. Detaik are as follow :—: — YORKSHIRE.
