DOMESTIC HELPERS

DEMAND STILL UNSATISFIED. Only three new arrivals were sent to employment during the month of' May by the Auckland Female Labour Bureau (records the official journal). Judging from the published reports of immigrants arriving at other ports in the Dominion, Auckland evidently receives a very poor share. The tourist hostels in the health resorts and thermal districts employ a large number of domestic workers, consequently tho private employers of Auckland are kept very short. There are always more than treble the applications for maids than maids to fill uhe vacant positions. At Master-ton " the general shortage of domestic help is still very apparent, and several good openings could readily be found were the applicants at all available." Wellington had 207 applications from employers for help and 103 applications from employees. Of these 92 women weie assisted, including 36 charwomen, 32 dome&tic servants' and one factory hand. In Nelson the dearth of domestic help is very keenly felt. There is also a demand for competent dressmakers, tailoresserJ, aud women workers in connection with jam and biscuit' and confectionery factories. The demand for all classes of women workers in Christchurch, especially domestics, is very keen, but the supply is still inadequate. Employees are very anxious to get, domestic help, particularly for the winter months, an the extra work entailed for fires, etc., is very trying for people -who are not very strong. Good wages are offered to domestics of all classes. There is also a great demand for factory workers, dressmakers, and apprentices for dressmakers and hosiery. The laundries also asre very busy, and require extra, workems. Attention is drawn in Dunedin to the great demand there for general servants compared with the few applications for that particular class of employment. Mother* with families of young children asp feelkg the want of. kelp vatx kqg&t.
