LOCAL AND GENERAL The conference of the Municipal A*-socia-tion of New Zealand will commence in the Town Hall, Wellington, on Monday, 29th July, at 10 a.m. At a meeting of Cabinet yesterday the tender of the Dunedin Engineering Company was accepted for the supply of pipes for the pipe line in connection with the Lake Oolerdige hydiro-eleotrical fcchenie. • There are about' one hundred workers' dwellings in the Dominion at present, and the Labour Department is negotiating for further blocks of land 'for dwollings in Oamaru, Mosgiel, Fi'anktou, Napier, Wellington, an<l other centres. The Native Land Court, presided over by Judge Gilfedder, yesterday investigated tho title ol a block of 5000 acres at pGiiearrow. Mr. 0. Beoro appeared for most of the native claimunte, Mr. J. J. M'Gralh for certain purchasers, and Mr. W. Jackeon and Mr. O'Dounell, (Nativo agents) for some Taraiiaki natives. The block, Mr. Beere explained to the Court, had originally been awaa-ded in 1847 by Colonel M'Cleverty to certain natives belonging to the Ngatihawirikura U-ibe, in consideration of their chief (Whafe-poui-i) having ceded Wellington to the Crown. The Court then proceeded to ascertain who were the living representatives of the tribe, and eventually all the natives interested came to' an amica-ble agreement ub to the partition of the block.
