There has been of late an extraordinary ' deic&nd for lifeboats hi British shipbuilding circles it being clearly the intention of all the owners •t/to do business with ithe Belfast yards to efluip their vessels with sufficient boats to ac-i-onrmodate every soul on board. Mesbre Harland and Wolff, Ltd.. despatched to Liverpool aad Southampton within a week about &0 boats of the usual size — viz., 32ft; while Messrs Workman, Clark, and Co. also shipped a large cumber. The demand, of course, has sent up ,the price. Formerly it was £1 per foot, but cow it is on the way to be 30s. To judge from ithe orders on hand, every boat builder in Belfast will be working at highest possible preshure for a long time to come. It is a significant fact that many owners still pin Hhelr faith to the old-fashioned wooden boat, and -will not have any other on their minds. TUEAKINA DELAYED. Tbe strike of transport workers in London has delayed ihe departure of the New Zealand Shipping Company's s.s. Turakina, which "was to have Bailed for Wellington on Saturday last. It ifi now probable that she will be detained at the Home port until the 20th lost., and tn that case will not arrive here untQ about the 6th August. The last big labour upheaval -also delayed the Turakina at .London, for almost two weeks. PUKAKI FEOM AUCKLAND. At 9 o'clock last evening the Pukaki sailed , from Auckland for Wellington.. On the run l down the vessel calls at Limestone Island i to take iv a. quantity of cement. She is due i here about Friday or Saturday. ~ THE STAE OF CANADA. * On Saturday next the Tyser Una steamer . Star of Canada is due to leave Bluff for Lyts teltoa for Homeward loading. After bhip- - ylng a quantity of frozen meat, cheese and other lines, the vessel will leave on Tuesday i iie\t for Gi*borne, Napier, and Wanganui. , From the lstter port abe comes on to Wellington, and loads here for London, leaving , finally on the 3rd July. \ The New Zealand Shipping Company's s.s. • Paparoa, from London-, via Brisbane, Duaedin, and Bluff, is due at Lyttelton to-day to complete discharging. She will afterwaids return , to Bluff for Homeward loading, and will go tc ' northern port;* to finish. 3 It is reported that since the Titanic disaster i the White Star authorities have determined i to carry two wireless operators on their vesb sels. They will thus b» able to keep a continuous communication with other riiipu or shore stations. The Shaw-Savill steamer Zealandic, now at Auckland, and doe here on Monday, has two wireless operators on boad. Mr. D. Cameron, lato tliinl oJiii-cr or -'■<> J Mapourika, has signed on the Klni as «c- " cond officer. t Mr. C. Crouciier has feuccerded iv. W. j Jond& as second officer of the l'ctoue. Mr. L. D. The Taviuni is still detained at Greymouth owing to tlie bad state of the bar. At 8 p.m. yesterday the Pukaki left Aneklaad for Wellington via Limestone Ifiland, where one calls to load 300 tons of cement for this port. The Koromiko arrived from Westport yesterday afternoon, tbe Kamona. arrives to-day, und the Koniata. on Friday, from the same port. The New Zealand Shipping Company's &c. Ocari leaves at (J a.m. to-morrow for Napier. 2he Maitui is to load next week tt Bluff, Oamaru. and Lyttelton. She goeß from tlie la*t mentioned port to Sydney and Newcastle, and returns to Lyttelton. Before leaving Greymouth for Australian ports the Kurori is to undergo overhaul at Port Chalmers. On tie SliSt October the New Zealand Shippins Company's steamer Hurunui i£ expected to leave Liverpool for Anekland, Wellington, and Beauty point (Tasmania). The vessel should leaub Auckland about tbe 15th December.
