TOWN-PLANNING

BILL TO BE INTIIODUCED BY MJi. A. M. MYEBS * AUCKLAND, 10th June. From remarks passed by the Hon. A. M. Myeis to a Manurewa town-plan-ning deputation this morning, it is evident that the ' Government proposes to introduce a Town Planning Bill in the coming session. The deputation waited on the Minister to ask for Government assistance in ' getting a town-planning scheme in operation for the Manurewa district, so that in future^ it might be-, come the model suburb of Auckland. Mr. Myers declared that it was the intention of the Government to introduce a Town Planning Bill, und submit it to Parliament in the coming session. Tho provisions in that Bill, he said, , .would, be euili tta would allow for tlw

delegation to local authorities of certain powers in connection with the cairying out of town-planning ideals. In a word, it would be^ necesstory.for the local authority having jurisdiction over a district to evolve some scheme within the powers that would be obtained under the new Bill. Speaking as one who had t alien a good deal of interest in local politic*, he would suggest that the time was ripe for a lead to be given in the question of town-planning by the formation of a garden city and townplanning association.* ( "I believe," he said, "that such a inovem-ant would achieve a success similar to what has been obtained in the Old Country and on the Continent, and if I were not myself in the forefront of publfc life at the moment, nothing would give me greater persona' pleasure than to throw my energies into this important question. I desire to assure the deputation representing the residents of Manurewa. that their efforts are in the right direction. Although, as Minister for Railways, I havp endeavoured to provide an accelerated service, so that residents of our suburbs can get more epeedily from one locality to another, I fully realise there is another aspect involved, and that is an economic issue. 1 believe that the solution of some of our industrial problems will be materially minimised if we become- alive to the desirableness of creating in our suburbs centres which would offer inducements for not only those who may live in the large cities, but also the provision of facilities for the establishment of manu-, factories alongside workmen's homes."
