AMATEUR ATHLETICS

MEETING OF THE NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL. Mr. A. Marryatt presided at a meeting of th© Council of the New Zealand, Amateur Athletic Association 1 last evening. Messrs. B. A. Guise, 'E. L. Chaff«y, M. H. Oram, W. F. Larkin, T. Crouch, C. Davies, and 0. E! Bridge were also present. J. E. M'Lennan. applied for reinstatement as an amateur. Ifc appeared that over three years ago M'Lennan competed successfully as a professional in th© Auckland and Bay of Plenty districts. He was reinstated as an amateur boxer and apparently being under the impression that he wa& then an amateur again for all sports he competed at th© Labour Day sports at Outram, Otago. There he won one heat and then, on his true position being pointed out to him, ho scratched for all engagements. The application was granted. It was decided to draw tho attention of th© Otago centre to the weakness of its officials in allowing M'Lenhan to compete after questioning him as to previous performances, and also to the facts that if th© proper entry forms had been used and the- officials had acledl in a proper manner, the whole trouble would, hay© been obviated. J. H. Jenkine, Dunedin, was also reinstated: ', „ -',-♦"•« v % ii,-X'i The' secretary 'of Th<T New Zealand Athletic Union (controlling cash athletics and cyling) wrote stating that the union was willing to enter into a TecipVocal agreement with th© council tso fifr as disqualified 'competitors were' concerned. The secretary of the Wellington centre wrote asking tho council's assistance m securing competitors from other centres at th© New Zealand cross-country championships to be held in Wellington on 10th August. Ttve council decided! to authorise ihe secretary to communicate with the oentres. - Information was received afi J to two unregistered meetings heltl by ' th© Westport Football Club. The meeting was avowedly amateur, but it was stated that cash men competed. It was decided to make enquiries as to whether th© club had set forth that their sport* were held' under th© N.Z.A.A.A. rules. '
