PERSONAL MATTERS.

The Governor will arrive in Wellington this evening from Hastings, expressly for the purpose of viewing the collection of pictures brought from England by Mr. J. Baillie. His Excellency will afterwards return to Auckland. Major-General Godley will return to Wellington from the North to-night. The Hon. J. A. Hanan, Minister for Education, passed through Christchurch yesterday on his way to Invercargiil. To-day he will attend 'the banquet which 13 to be given to Mr. J. 0. Thomson, M.P., at Otautau, and will then return to Invercargiil for a day or two. Coming north again he will visit the children's institutions at Otekaike, and will receive deputations in Chrislchurch. The Hon. W. D. S. Mac Donald returned last night from Nelson and leaves tomorrow for Stratford, where he will attend a banquet to Mr. J. M'Cluggage, who stood in the Government interest at Iho last election. The Hons. A. M. Myers and 11. G. Ell will leave for Chiistchurch to-night. After visiting tho Addington workshops Mr. Myeta will proceed to Dunediu. To-morrow the Hon. G. W. Russell will leave for Palmerston North, to confer with the Hospital Board there. Captain Smith, Royal Naval Registrar, left for Auckland by the Main Trunk express at mid-day to-day. Colonel E. S. Heard, Director of Staff Duties, was a passenger from tho South by the Maori this morning. A "social" is In be given for the Hon. T. Biixton on Friday evening at Fairlie by hh constituents in that district. The Premier is to ho present. Mr. Fied L^snar, of Gisborne, and Mrs. LvniiHi'. aio in Wellington, en route for London. Speaking at Orawia last evening (says a Prers Association message) the Prime Minister suid tho Dominion had lose a very useful citiucn by the death of the Hon, J. M'Gowan. Ho was a man of outstanding worth, who lintl devoted himself to the uplifting of his fellows. Ho would be grently miwed from tho Legifilature. The flon. J. Colvin will represent the Government at the funeral of Mr. M'Gowan.
