FIRE AT HAWERA. HOTEL AND SHOP DESTROYED. HEAVY LOSS.

fBY aELEQBAPH— PRESS ASSOCIATIOK.j HAWERA, 28th April. A destructive fire occurred at Hawer* at five o'clock this morning, resulting in the Central Hotel (Barclay Harrington, licensee, and D. Barry, owner), and Messrs. M'Gruer, Bone and Co.'s drapery premises, owned by Mre. Morrissey, being completely destroyed. The fire originated in the hotel, and when discovered it had a good hold. The brigade was considerably handicapped by the poor water supply, while a strong westerly was blowing. The fire, .fanned by the wind, quickly en veloped the building, and spread to M'Gruer. Bone and Co. 'a, on the opposite corner of High and Union streets. Th« brigade, seeing it was impossible t.o save the hotel, concentrated its efforts on M'Gruet's building, but was unable to check the progress of the flames, and the shop was burned to the ground. Nothing waa saved from the hotel or the shop, the inmates of the hotel escaping m their night attire. M'Gruer and Co.'s stock was insured for £3000 in the New Zealand Insurance office, and was valued at £8000 ; building, £800 in the South British office, valued at £2000. The hotel premises, insured for £1760 in the New Zealand Insurance office, and £1000 in the London and Lancashire office, were valued at over £3000. The licensee had £250 on his stock, worth £500, and £750 on the furniture, valued at £1000, all in tho Alliance office \
