LAYING CABLES.
preliminary overland work:. AUCKLAND, 26th Apiil.. Preliminary overland work in connection with bringing the direct Sydney cable and Doubtless Bay (Pacific) cable to Auckland is being carried on under the superintendence of Mr. Baird, telegraph engineer. Mr. Baird informed a Herald representative that he had prepared plans and 'Specifications for trenches where cables nre to be laid. Timber for the cable hut at Muriwai, where the cable from Sydney will be landed, has been sent forward, and the erection of the hut will be proceeded with at once. This hut 'is to be fitted with bunks and te&ting rooms, so that, in the event of a breakdown, those entrusted with the work of ixjpaii 1 can live in the building for severul days if necessary. The operating room at the new General 'Posi Office, where the two cables will be brought, is 37 feet by 34 feet, while the abstract room for writing up is 14 feet by 26 feet. In direct communication with these roome is a room 16 feet by 22£ feet for the superintendent. Besides these there are four other rooms, these including one for batteries, a test room, a retiring room for thestaff, and a workshop. It is expected that both cables will be in full working ord«r at the Auckland Post Office and Telegraph Office by the end of November. / '•
