THE ESCAPED PRISONER.

STILL AT LARGE. The prisoner John Lewis, who escaped from custody, while at work in the prison brick yards yesterday^ is still at liberty. When he scaled the wall surrounding the yard-h e was fired on by a warder, but the aim. wa6 defective, and Lewis managed to get away. It is stated that the prisoner dreaded going back to New Plymouth and that by his conduct, since his release by the Prison Board, he had prejudiced the chances of other men who are confined there as "habituals." It is further suggested that these men would have visited their displeasure on him on tho grounds that he v )xaA prejudiced their chances of liberation. Lewis made his escape with the aid of a plank placed against the corrugated iron wall surrounding the grounds. It k reported that he was seen in Finlayterrace after he escaped, but so far all efforts to recapture him have failed. Several policemen and probationers, artillerymen, and others are out searching to-day.

The Court of Appeal reserved its decision this afternoon in the case, ' Williams and others v. Miramar, Ltd. Mr. C. P. Skerrett, K.C., with him Mr. C. B. Morison, appeared for appellant, and Mr. H.
