FIRST WOMAN DETECTIVE.
Mayor Gaynor, of New York, haß appointed the first official woman detective iii America. This was Mrs. Goodwin, a police matron, who Was responsible for the Selection and arrest of two mon and a woman in connection with a daring taxi-cab robbery on 16th February, whoii two bank messengers were robbed of £5000 in the heart of tho financial district in New York. Mrs. Goodwin followed the caBO very closely, and did not divulge her plans to anyone until she felt sure of her ground. Having satisfied herself that she had tracked the right people, she gave them in charge just as they were preparing to leave New York by rail. The police have established an unassailable case, and Mrs. Goodwin's efforts were brought to the notice of Commissioner Waldo. She expressed _ a liking for police work, and was accordingly appointed municipal detective at a salary of £550 a year.
