WELLINGTON EAST CLUB FORMED The Kilbirnie Chess Club, which has had a very successful career since its formation two years ago, has just been absorbed by a larger club, which was formed on the 10th inst., under the title of the Wellington East Cheee Club. Dr. Newman was elected patron of the new club. Dr. De Latour president, and Mr. I. Le Sueur hon. secretary. The members meet for play in the club room of the Hataitai bowling pavilion on Tuesday evenings. The formal opening toqk place this week, fifteen members putting in an appearance. As the result of an energetic canvass and the distribution of circulars, a large number of members have been enrolled. The club is taking steps to affiliate with the New Zealand Ches* Association, and ' proposes to nominate Mr. Hicjcs as its competitor at the annual congress for the New Zealand championship.' Mr., Kicks, it will be remembered, came very^,near to winning the championship at, jljje Napier congress, only being put out of first .place in the last round of the tourney. The committee is arranging an attractive programme .of matches and tournaments (including "ladder" matches) for the ensuing season.- The first of these attractions is a fourteen afiide match with the Working Men's Club at the Hataitai bowling pavilion on .the 30th inst. On the, principle that "a good start is half the battle," Dr. Newman should find himself patron of a very successful club, the outlook being of the brightest. SOUTH WELLINGTON CLUB. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING. The seventh annual general meeting of' the above club wae held last evening in Ihe club room, Newtown ' Public Library, there being a large attendance of members. Mn W. It 'stated that the /pasl year "had not been a satisfactory one from a. financial point of view, us there ha 4 been an income of only £8 to meet the annually "recurring expenditure of £11. As, however, a slight' reduction had been granted in the rent by the City uouncil, the club should this year be able to live within its means. The cash in hand is just sufficient to meet the liabilities, but the advisableness of securing new members is strongly urged with a view to putting the club in a stronger position. Two enjoyable matches -were played and won, the touring Wairarapa team being defeated in June by 8 to 3, and the Working Men'ft Club in September by 9 to 7. The annual handicap tourney ended in Mi-. B. B. Allen (Class I.) winning the first' prize, and Mr. Purchas (Class HI.) the second prize. Messrs. Perrott and Welton- also scored well. Mr. Hida again represented the club in the annual Y,sw Zealand championship tourney (held »♦ Napier), and tied for fourth prize, *iy same position he took at the Timaru' congress of the previous year. The thanks of the club are accorded to Mr. Hicks for presenting a handsome framed photograph of N the Napier congress, and to M€«sr*. Hicks, Welton, and Perrott, for donations, enabling a small chess library to be acquired. The report was unanimoufly adopted on the motion of Mr. Allen. The election of officers resulted as follows :— President, Mr. B. B. Men ; vicepresidents, Rev. Jenkins, Dr. Kemp, Dr. Bowerbank, Messrs. R. A. Wright and Armstrong ; hon. tecietary and treasurer, Mr. D. ( Purchas (re-elected) ; committee, Messrs. Welton, Harper, Weine, Perrott, and Belt; auditor, Mr. F. K. Kelling ; delegate to New Zealand Chess Association, Mr. W. J. Harper (re-elected). It wa6 decided to open the season on the 3rd May with an electoral match, So"* 1 * Wellington v. rest of the club. An invitation is extended to ex-members to take part in this contest, for which the chances of the " all-comers " are most fancied. Mr. Allen returned thanks for his election to the office of president, and expressed the hope that hs • would b© able to assist the furtherance of chees in the district. A vote of thanks to Mr. Armstrong for presiding closed the meeting.
