Four Italian battleships, accompanied 1 by twenty-two torpedo boats, opened fir© on the outer forte at 8000 yds., The forts replied. Merchantmen were &1-, lowed to proceed northward. Turkish mine-laying ships are completing the closing of the straits. British subjects embarked o«i a. steamer. The fleet fired 180 projectiles, but they, did not seriously damage the barracks or forts. ' One Italian vessel took fire. The fleet has put to sea. The Governors of Mitylene and Rhode* report that two Italian ships shelled the ' barracks above Vathe for- three hours „ and a-half. , * Parliament ha* opened. Tlio " Sultan, in . referring to the war, declared, that peace wa-s only possible on the condition of tlie effective maintenance of Turkey's sovereign rights. lie applauded the bravery of lurks and Arabs.
