WIDOWS AND ORPHANS.

The valuation report of the actuary, Mr. H. T. Traversi, was presented and adopted: at the quarterly meeting of the Widows and Orphans Society of the Manchester. Unity of Oddfellows, Wellington branch, last evening. Bro. It. Clark presided- The report showed that tliis society was estqblißhed in. 1849 with, the object of affording relief to the widows and children of deceased members. The benefit fund showed an increase from £2393 tv .63696. The members are of^ an average age of 48 years. The average death payment is over £50. The deaths were all amongst old members, the number being four at against six expected by the New Zealand Friendly Societies' tables, and eight expected by the Healthy Males' table (English). There is a surplus of £419 against £366 at 1906. The actuary recommend»ed the application of £170 to provideadditional insurance of 25s to each member for every complete year of membership between 31sfc December, 1906, and 31st December, 1910. It followed then that every member of class I. would receive a, total addition of" £11 to his insurance, whilst members of class 11. who had completed four years' hiembsrship or more would receive an addition of £3. "The striking results of the society's operations," states tire actuary, "form quite an object lesson ' as to what can I be achieved by successful management. Great credit ia reflected on those who carried on the operations for so many years. The main source of profit for 6ome .time past has been the excellent investment results, and so long as these are maintained with due safety, considerable surpluses should continue to I accrue." \ - ,
