WARM DISCUSSION. CITY COUNCILLORS' VIEWS. A heated' discussion took place at last night's meeting of the City Council, when Councillor J. Fuller, jun., moved — " That ordinary fares only be charged on the trams on Good Friday, and not double fares as in the past. .-Trouble ai-osb from the fact that Councillor Fuller V 736 absent when his motion came on originally, and the council had adopted a Tramway Committee recorninendution to charge double fares. The Acting-Mayor (Mr. John Smith) held that he was out of order, but did not prevent his speaking to the motion in order to givo every latitude. The mover said that Wellington was> the only city in Anstralae-ia where double fares were charged on, Good Friday. The public should' not be penalised on ono of the few days it had for enjovrnent. The Acting-Mayor said it. would not be fair to put the motion. Councillor Fuller: Can't 1 rescind the other motion? ' vThe Acting-Mayor: No; it woidd require a notice. After some fmiher dibcusiion tho Acting-Mayor declined to put the motion, as, it was not a rescinding motion. There was a distinct difference of opinion between the chairman and several councillors on the point, which was debated in a free maavner. Councillor A. H. Hindinarsh, M.P., then, moved, and Councillor Fuller eeponded, that the ruling be disagreed with. The chairman: I reluse to put it. Further noisy discussion took place, and councillors di'ifted out, as the busine.^ had been concluded. Councillor Fuller's voice, however, was heard in loud protest at his treatment, which he called a crying shame, a remark to which the chairman objected. The argument then proceeded in the anteroom.
